What is the construction and purpose of gearboxes and drive systems?

Gearboxes and drive systems are a set of parts responsible for transferring torque from the engine to the wheels. A typical system includes a transmission, differential, half-shafts, drive shaft, mounts, and control or electronic elements. Depending on the vehicle's design, these sub-assemblies are mounted transversely or longitudinally and work with a specific type of engine and suspension.

What are gearboxes and drive systems used for?

Gearboxes and drive systems are used for changing gears and effectively transferring power to the wheels in various driving conditions. They are responsible for starting, accelerating, driving at a constant speed, and utilizing the engine's torque. Without their proper operation, problems with driving smoothness, traction, noise, or power transfer to the correct axle occur.

What is the construction and function of the differential?

The differential is a drivetrain element mounted between the half-shafts or in the axle housing. It serves to distribute torque and allows the wheels of one axle to rotate at different speeds when cornering. Depending on the version, it works with half-shafts, bearings, the main gear, and sensors of driving assistance systems.

How to choose a gearbox for a specific car?

It is safest to compare the OEM number, gearbox code, engine type, drive type, and body version. It is also worth checking the mounts, flange type, sensors, and wiring harness if the car has an automatic or electronically controlled gearbox. In many cases, the VIN number is also helpful.

What symptoms may indicate a problem with the gearbox or drive system?

Typical symptoms include jerking when shifting gears, noise during acceleration, vibrations when starting, whining from the transmission area, or play in the half-shaft or shaft. In automatics, delayed reactions, controller errors, and uneven operation after the oil warms up may also appear. Such symptoms should be compared with the gearbox code and the condition of the cooperating equipment.

How to take care of gearboxes and drive systems after installation?

After installation, you should check the oil level and condition, the tightness of seals, and the correct mounting of the gearbox and drive elements. It is worth observing whether there are any leaks, vibrations, incorrect selector operation, or noise under load. Regular inspection of equipment, oil cooling, and shaft supports helps maintain the proper operation of the entire system.
