What is the construction and purpose of shock absorbers and struts?

Shock absorbers and struts are suspension elements mounted at the vehicle's wheels, responsible for damping spring movements and stabilizing the body. A typical shock absorber consists of a body, piston rod, seals, and mounting points, and a strut additionally cooperates with the spring and upper bearing. These elements are mounted on the front or rear axle, depending on the suspension construction.

What are shock absorbers and struts used for?

Shock absorbers and struts are used to limit vibrations arising while driving on uneven surfaces and to keep the wheel in constant contact with the road surface. Their operation affects braking efficiency, handling predictability, and even tire load. Without efficient damping, the suspension transfers shocks to the body and cooperating subassemblies faster.

What is the construction and function of a McPherson strut?

A McPherson strut is a suspension unit where the shock absorber works directly with the spring, upper mount, and bearing. This solution combines the function of damping and wheel guidance, so it has an impact not only on comfort but also on the front axle geometry. Mounting points, body version, and compatibility with mounting equipment are important during selection.

How to choose a shock absorber for a specific car?

It is safest to compare the OEM part number, replacement numbers, vehicle placement, and suspension type. It is worth checking if the part is intended for the front or rear, left or right side, and if it fits the standard or sports version. Verification by VIN and comparing mounting points is also useful.

What symptoms indicate wear of shock absorbers and struts?

Typical symptoms include oil leaks, knocking, excessive body swaying, and worsened stability during braking and cornering. Uneven tire wear and less precise car reaction to irregularities often appear. Such signals should be compared with the condition of mounts, springs, and shock absorber covers.

What to pay attention to when installing used shock absorbers and struts?

Before installation, assess tightness, piston rod condition, housing corrosion, and the completeness of mounting points. A good practice is to simultaneously check bump stops, covers, upper mounts, and cooperating elements on the same axle. After installation, it is worth checking the suspension geometry and general system operation during a test drive.
