What is the construction and purpose of engine mounts?

Engine mounts are components that attach the power unit to the vehicle's body or subframe. They usually consist of metal brackets and a damping part made of rubber, elastomer, or a hydraulic insert. Their task is to keep the engine in the correct position and limit the transmission of vibrations to the cabin. The mounting location depends on the car's design and the specific support point of the drivetrain.

What are engine mounts used for?

Engine mounts are used to stabilize the operation of the engine and gearbox during starting, acceleration, and load changes. They limit jerking and noise, and also protect hoses, the exhaust, and other accessory elements from excessive overload. Without functional mounts, the risk of vibrations felt in the body and faster wear of cooperating parts increases.

What is the construction and function of the hydraulic insert in an engine mount?

The hydraulic insert is the part of the engine mount responsible for more precise damping of vibrations of different frequencies. It refers to a design where, in addition to the elastic part, a working chamber with a damping medium is used. Such a solution improves drive comfort and is used in cars with higher power or in Diesel units. When selecting, you must verify the design compatibility with the OEM number and engine version.

How to choose engine mounts for a specific car version?

It is safest to compare the OEM part number, replacement numbers, fuel type, and vehicle placement. It is also worth checking whether the part is intended for the right or left side and whether it fits the given equipment version. In case of differences between pre-facelift and post-facelift models, verification by VIN or the marking from the removed element will be helpful.

What symptoms indicate engine mount wear?

Most often, there are more noticeable vibrations at idle, knocking when starting, or changing engine position under load. The driver may also notice more noise in the cabin and less smooth drivetrain operation. These symptoms should be compared with the condition of the mounts and brackets, as damage often occurs together.

What to pay attention to before installing engine mounts?

Before installation, check the condition of threads, bolts, brackets, and contact surfaces. The compatibility of the part's shape, the number of mounting points, and the mounting position with the removed element is also important. If the repair involves several components at once, it is good to also assess the condition of adjacent mounts and engine accessories.
